Mercedes Ocotepeque Limitada Coffee Cooperative (COCAMOL) brings together 51 members, 21 of whom are women. Providing women with good market access and a sustainable livelihood remains very important in many Latin American countries where nothing is taken for granted..
The green beans come from Caturra, Catuai, Lempira, IHCAFE 90 and Parainema varieties, grown at altitudes between 1,300 and 1,550 metres.
Through the fair trade and organic certifications, families have been able to improve the quality and increase production volume, as well as to have better access to the market, which is essential for their living conditions.
Some of the projects currently active with the Fairtrade trademark are:
- Training to increase productivity. The goal is to increase the income of farming families.
- A new warehouse to ensure good storage conditions.
- Acquisition of a small roasting plant for quality control. The goal is to further increase the quality of coffee and therefore income for farmers.
- Local production of organic fertilisers for the soil.
- Marketing activities to increase sales volume under Fairtrade conditions.
